Middle School Students Visit SJ&B

The SJ&B welcomed some pint-sized visitors to Mass Media on Friday as a group of seventh and eighth graders from Moss Middle School learned how journalism is being transformed by today’s technology.

The 22 students, all enrolled in a gifted and talented program, were given a tour of the building and watched a presentation on digital media by Cliff Shaluta…all while filming the day’s events with some of the SJ&B’s new flip cameras. They then imported their “mini movies” while Mark Simpson shared some editing advice.

While some students just wanted to play candid camera, others got more out of the visit.

Seventh-grader Eldar Gorak said he was excited to come to campus because he wants to learn more about technology, video and broadcasting. He also plans to be a Hilltopper one day as well. “It’s exciting to learn about how things are going to change in the future,” he said.

Julia Gensheimer, also a seventh grader, thought it would be cool to see what the journalism students are doing. She said it was interesting to find out that everything is going to be put on the internet one day and how digitalized the world was becoming. But, “the flip cameras were pretty neat too.”
